Every year, either during or after its iPhone event, Apple announces the release date of its new software updates for its iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches. This year was no different, although we haven’t gotten every release date for the new updates.
iOS 13 and iPadOS Release Dates
That being said, we still have confirmed release dates for both iOS 13 and iPadOS. According to Apple, the former will begin rolling out to users on September 19th, while the latter will begin shipping September 30th alongside the new 10.2-inch iPad.
iOS 13 brings a ton of new features to the table for iPhone users, while those on iPad get an entirely dedicated OS with new gestures and UI elements. Here’s a breakdown of some of the features you’ll find across the board.

- New portrait lighting controls
- All-new Photos app
- Video editing w/ video rotation
- Sign In with Apple log-in method (similar to Facebook/Google log-in)
- All-new Maps experience
- All-new CarPlay UI
- New Siri voice
- Audio sharing with two sets of AirPods on one iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
- Message announcements via Siri in AirPods
- New Memoji controls
- Memoji Stickers
- Swipe typing
- All-new Reminders app
- Faster performance
- 30 percent faster Face ID
- ARKit 3 w/ background object support
As far as compatibility, iOS 13 will be available on the iPhone 6S and every other iPhone that after it. In addition, iPadOS will be available on iPads dating all the way back to the 2014 iPad Air 2.
I’ll have a full review of both iOS 13 and iPadOS later this month. Still waiting on hearing about release dates for watchOS 6, macOS Catalina, and tvOS 13, but that news will probably come soon.
