Today was keynote day in Cupertino, California. It was the day Apple took to the stage to announce its newest iPhones, a new iPad, and a new Apple Watch. This article is gonna focus on the new watch, the Series 5.
Admittedly, there isn’t much to say about the Series 5. It looks just like Series 4 and has basically the same feature set. There are a few notable new features, but it’s nothing too crazy. Y’know, unless you’ve been dying for an always-on display.
Instead of writing out a long and drawn-out article about this new watch, I decided to summarize the device into five key points. Not only is this possible, it’s also probably what everyone should be doing. There’s just enough new stuff with the Series 5 to do it.
1. Always-On Display
The biggest complaint users have had over the years with the Apple Watch is the lack of an always-on display. It’s been the biggest advantage to owning a Wear OS device, and now, it’s coming to Apple Watch with the Series 5.
Of course, Apple says it re-engineered the entire Apple Watch Series 5’s display so it wouldn’t suck up more juice than it would without an AOD. Because of this, Apple claims it’ll last the same 18 hours the Series 4 could on a full charge.
The next new feature with Series 5 is the inclusion of a built-in compass. Now, if you need to go in a specific direction, Apple Watch can show you the way to go. This feels like one of those no-brainer features that should’ve been in the very first Apple Watch, but whatever.
3. Improved Safety
Apple likes to flaunt the safety features you get with its watch, and the Series 5 allows them to do just that. With this new watch, you have the ability to contact emergency services in over 150 countries (so long as you have the cellular model, that is). No matter where you bought your Apple Watch, you’ll be able to get in touch with the correct emergency contact in case you need it.
4. Better Performance
As is the case with every Apple Watch iteration, the new Series 5 comes with an S5 chip inside. It’ll be faster than the Series 4. That is all.
5. New Models
Finally, the new Series 5 will come in new titanium and ceramic models. New straps, Hermès variants, Nike editions, and more will also be sold.
That’s pretty much the Apple Watch Series 5 in a nutshell. Of course, it’ll also come with watchOS 6, but that was basically a given.
Pricing & Availability
The new Series 5 will start at $399 for the GPS-only model, while the cellular model will retail for $499. It’ll go up for sale September 20th and go up for preorder this Friday.
