Today at its Build 2019 conference, Microsoft introduced a new Windows Terminal app that will replace existing command line programs built into Windows 10. With Windows Terminal, the powers of Cmd, PowerShell, and WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) will be integrated into a single app with tab, emoji, and text rendering support. This will not only enhance the experience of using Windows 10 for developers, but it will also make it easier for anyone to access command prompts on the OS.
In addition, Microsoft is upgrading WSL to WSL 2. With WSL 2, you get double the performance and support for Linux Docker containers.
Both WSL 2 and the Windows Terminal app will launch this June for Insiders. The public should get both features sometime in the future.
