It’s no secret that Apple’s AirPower wireless charging mat might be the biggest mystery on the Internet at the moment. The company originally debuted the accessory alongside the iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3, and AirPods back in 2017. Since then, the company hasn’t officially acknowledged its existence and even scraped mentions of the device from its website. Reports have surfaced which point to Apple approving production of the device, but nothing official has been announced thus far.
Thankfully, those holding out to purchase AirPower might not have to wait much longer. A new image has surfaced on Apple’s website in Australia which clearly shows AirPower charging a 2018 iPhone and the latest version of AirPods.
This leak obviously comes with a couple disclaimers. For one, Michael Bateman (the person who found the render and tipped it to MacRumors) had to do some serious digging in Apple’s code to pull up the image in the first place. This indicates Apple isn’t necessarily reader to show off the gadget. Then there’s the fact that the photo doesn’t confirm AirPower’s imminent launch. The best it does is hint that the accessory will be released soon. It’s a good hint, mind you, but it’s far from a confirmed launch date.
Many were hoping that Apple would announce AirPower this week, given the fact that we got new iPads, new Macs, and new AirPods consecutively earlier this week. Since we haven’t received any formal press release announcing the accessory, however, it’s unclear if the company will release the gadget before its March 25th event, a keynote that’s likely to focus exclusively on streaming services rather than hardware.
Regardless, with many pieces of evidence beginning to emerge and hinting at an eventual launch, we expect to see AirPower hit the market sooner than later. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.
