Samsung has begun rolling out an update to the Bixby app that lets users remap the physical Bixby button on certain Galaxy phones. The functionality was confirmed to arrive on the Galaxy S10, S9, S8, Note 9, and Note 8 just over a week ago. Now, it’s making its way to all supported Galaxy-branded phones. The update was first noted by SamMobile.
With the feature, users can reprogram the button to do whatever they want. This includes perform a Bixby action, open a different app, or even choose a new voice assistant. However, one major exception to this is the fact you can’t remap the button to open the Google Assistant. The Verge‘s Dan Seifert was first to discover this on his Galaxy S10 Plus review unit.
That being said, it’s probably only a matter of time until some developer comes up with a workaround. Still, it’s interesting that despite freeing up the Bixby button entirely, Samsung still isn’t letting you use Google’s voice assistant.
To update the Bixby app on your Galaxy smartphone, head over to the updates section of the Galaxy Store, an app that comes pre-installed on all of Samsung’s phones.
