Samsung’s Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10e will start shipping next week, and we’re beginning to learn new details about the phones ahead of their official launch. Specifically, we know what will be covering the S10 and S10 Plus right out of the box: an included screen protector.
Over on Samsung’s community website, the company has confirmed both the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus will come with pre-installed plastic screen protectors. Other companies in the past such as OnePlus have done this with cheap-feeling screen protectors, and it looks like that will be Samsung’s approach in this case.
Why do it all? It’s likely due to compatibility issues. With typical glass screen protectors, the Galaxy S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner might not work. YouTuber MKBHD found this out in a recent video which demonstrates the issue. Because of this, Samsung is likely trying to provide consumers with a first-party alternative.
In the same breath, some companies are claiming their glass screen protectors will work with the S10 and S10 Plus. For instance, Whitestone Dome has a new protector it’ll be releasing soon for $49.99. So long as its the right thickness, I can see the accessory working with the S10’s fingerprint scanner. But until I get to test it out, I’ll withhold judgment.
If you choose to take off the pre-installed protector you’ll be able to buy a $29.99 replacement at Samsung’s website. It’s worth noting the S10e won’t come with a screen protector since it doesn’t require something proprietary since the fingerprint scanner is mounted to the side of the phone
When I get my S10 unit, I know I’ll be taking it off because, well, I hate pre-installed screen protectors. Of course, I’ll be sure to snap a couple of pictures and post them on social media beforehand so stay tuned.
