Microsoft has yet to release the first major Windows 10 update for 2019, but that isn’t stopping the company from looking pretty far into the future.
Exclusive for Windows Insiders opted into the Skip Ahead ring, Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 10 build 18836. The update is codenamed 20H1, meaning the software will be released to the public in the first half of 2020. It’s unclear exactly as to why the company is beginning to test software that won’t see the light of day until next year, but Dona Sarkar states some developments in the upgrade “require a longer lead time.” In other words, the chocolate cake needs to stay in the oven longer than the cookies.
As far as what’s new in build 18836, there’s nothing. Absolutely nothing. In fact, when there’s an updated 20H1 build released, it’ll simply include the features already packed in 19H1 and 19H2. So until much later this year, we won’t exactly know what 20H1 will bring to the table.
All that being said, if you’d like to live on the wild side and install 20H1 on your Windows 10 device, simply opt into the Skip Ahead ring by heading to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program.
