This week, iOS 12.2 began rolling out to developers and registered users as a beta, and 9to5Mac obviously got a hold of it. And after tearing through it, the publication was basically able to confirm the next AirPods will support “Hey Siri” detection.

In iOS 12.2, 9to5Mac says there’s a setup screen (pictured above) that will appear after you connect your new AirPods to your iOS device, allowing you to use “Hey Siri” commands much like with other Apple gadgets.
“When pairing the new, yet to be released AirPods, the user will be asked to set up “Hey, Siri”, just like it can be set up for other devices such as iPhones and iPads,” wrote Guilherme Rambo. “This training configures AirPods to respond to only the user’s voice and not the voice of other people. The main difference from using “Hey, Siri” with these new AirPods will be that the AirPods themselves will do the recognition, sending the command to the paired device. This means you’ll be able to use Siri while your iPhone is in your pocket without having to tap on your AirPods.”

New AirPods with “Hey Siri” recognition have been in the rumor cycle for quite some time. At Apple’s iPhone XS event, during a hype video in the beginning, a woman can be heard saying “Hey Siri” into her AirPods, to which Siri eventually replies. Then there’s the multiple reports about new AirPods eventually coming out, with the latest indicating an H1 2019 timeframe for the headphones.

The next generation of AirPods won’t just ship with “Hey Siri” support. They’ll also come with new health tracking features, water resistance, and a wireless charging case. They might also come with a tweaked design, but no major design refreshes are expected.

Whatever the case, we’ll keep you in the loop if we hear anything more about these mysterious new buds.
