Last year, Vivo unveiled a phone called the Apex that served as a concept device, giving us a glimpse at what the future of the smartphone might behold. The device eventually evolved into the Nex which went up for sale, but the Apex never actually reached the market. Today, we’re getting a new phone called the Apex 2019 that will likely reach the same fate.
Vivo announced the Apex 2019 in a press release today as a concept phone, giving us an idea at what companies have in store for future smartphones. According to the company, the device packs a curved waterdrop glass design with no seems or openings, including no ports or buttons. We saw a similar design with the Meizu Zero this week.
Instead, the Vivo Apex 2019 opts for pressure sensitivity to detect volume up/down and power commands from users’ touch. It also comes with a
For the speaker, the Apex 2019 uses Body SoundCasting technology which transforms the display into a loud speaker via a vibration function. This completely eliminates the need for a speaker grille. Again, it’s not clear how well it works, but there’s a good chance it’ll make its way into a future smartphone so expect more coverage when that happens.
Speaking of the display, as you can tell, there are also zero bezels around it. This make the device look extremely modern and futuristic. What’s more, Vivo says it comes with a fingerprint sensor that covers nearly the entire surface area of the screen. It’s what the company calls a “full-display fingerprint sensor.” This puts other phones with an in-display fingerprint reader to shame like the OnePlus 6T and Huawei Mate 20 Pro which have designated areas for the fingerprint scanners. With a full-screen option, you’d be able to place your finger anywhere on the screen and securely unlock something.
Finally, Vivo is also sharing some specs that are inside this concept device. The Apex 2019 comes with a Snapdragon 855 processor, a whopping 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, 5G connectivity, and dual rear cameras.
The device will be on display at MWC 2019. No pricing or release information was given because, again this is a concept phone. It’s not meant to go on sale.
