Dish is Adding the Google Assistant to its Receivers

Google and Dish have announced the latter’s Hopper receivers and DVRs will soon receive full integration of the Google Assistant. Before, you were able to access Dish-specific features via a smart speaker or your phone thanks to the Assistant, but now, you’ll be able to right from the television itself.

“Our customers love the convenience of voice control, so we’re expanding functionality to make it even more powerful,” said Niraj Desai, DISH vice president of product management. “As a DISH subscriber, you will soon get the Google Assistant and all its incredible features – like adjusting your thermostat, managing your calendar or simply asking for the latest news – for free, right on your TV.”

According to Dish, you’ll be able to do all the normal Google Assistant things with your Hopper like ask questions, check the weather, view sports scores, and more. You’ll also be able to use your TV as a giant picture frame thanks to integration with Google Photos.

Customers who have a Dish voice remote and broadband-connected Hopper, Joey, or Wally receivers will have access to the Assistant. All new Dish customers who receive a voice remote will also get the feature, as will those who upgrade to a voice remote for $20.
