When Motorola debuted the first Moto Z smartphone back in 2016, the company promised three generations of devices that would support the company’s Moto Mod accessory system. Last year, Moto made good on its promise and introduce the third-gen Moto Z Play and Moto Z smartphones with Mod support.
This year, it was presumed Moto Mods would simply die off, likely due to Moto’s unlikely support and the fact not many people even use the accessories. But according to new renders provided by @OnLeaks and CompareRaja, it looks like the modular ecosystem might stick around for a bit longer.
In the renders, it’s easy to spot the larger bezel-less display with a teardrop notch, single rear camera system, USB-C port, and headphone jack. But look at the back of the device and you’ll notice the same pin system we’ve been seeing on Motorola flagships since 2016. That’s because rumor has it the Z4 Play won’t be the smartphone to initially drop support for Moto Mods.
I have a theory as to why Moto isn’t ready to drop Moto Mod support just yet, and that’s 5G. Motorola has a 5G Mod for the Z3 that will enable 5G connections on Verizon. Because the company wants to make the technology as widely available as possible, it’s likely the upcoming Z4 Play will include support for the accessory. I don’t know this for sure, but it’s the most credible idea I’ve been able to come up with.

No release date has been announced for the Moto Z4 Play just yet, but historically, the device has made a debut toward the end of the first half of the year. Therefore, we’ll likely have to wait until April or May to see this device in person. Of course, we’ll keep you up to speed on any leaks that occur in the meantime.
