After announcing the update yesterday, Apple has finally begun rolling out iOS 12.1 for iPhone and iPad users. The update can be installed by heading over to Settings > General > Software update. From there, you’ll see the listing for the build. Just tap “Download and install” and wait for your phone or tablet to complete the process. I recommend plugging in your device beforehand so you don’t run out of power before the installation is complete.
With iOS 12.1, Apple includes various new features. For instance, group FaceTime is finally starting to roll out, allowing up to 32 people to participate in the same FaceTime call. Apple also says users of iOS can expect more than 70 new emoji, including red hair, gray hair, and curly head characters alongside things like a cupcake, bagel, llama, swan, and skateboard.
Much cooler than the new emoji, however, is depth control for your photos. With iOS 12.1, you’ll be able to dynamically adjust how blurry you want your background to be in portrait mode. You’ll also have the functionality for portrait mode selfies taken with the TrueDepth camera.
Finally, Apple also says dual SIM support will be rolling out with iOS 12.1 to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. Your carrier will need to support the functionality so be sure that your service provider falls onto this list.
