During VidCon 2018, YouTube took the stage to unveil a suite of new features for creators that opens up a ton of new possibilities for channels and the way subscribers interact with them. The new features include Channel Memberships, Merchandise, and Premieres, all of which will begin rolling out soon.
Let’s start with Channel Memberships. Much like you would pay a recurring monthly fee for access to something like a person’s Patreon or Twitch profile, YouTube will now allow creators to charge $4.99 per month for a membership to their channel. This would give an end user access to exclusive content like videos, posts, badges, and new emoji. The company has had this feature before with Sponsorships that were exclusive to a select few YouTubers. Now, anyone with more than 100,000 subscribers will be able to take advantage of the feature.
Next up, Merchandise. Lots of YouTubers have their own merch outlets that require you to visit an entirely different website in order to purchase it. Now, YouTube will not only present your merch in your own storefront on your channel, but you’ll even be able to create it thanks to TeeSpring integration. YouTube says more merchandising partners will arrive soon. You’ll need more than 10,00 subscribers in order to gain access to this feature, but at least it’s more accessible than Channel Memberships.
Finally, YouTube is also announcing Premieres. Essentially, it’s another way to livestream content on the platform. Instead of hosting a big livestream that requires you to actually sit in front of a camera and talk to people in a chat, you can instead pre-record a video and set it to premiere live on your channel in the future. This will allow your subscribers to all gather into one space and watch your content in the moment, all while chatting with each other. It’s basically like a movie theater. YouTube even says it’ll create a custom landing page to build up hype leading to your premiere.
It isn’t clear how many subscribers you need to host Premieres, but we’ll let you know when we have more clarification.
All of these announcements come as YouTube says there are now 1.9 billion logged-in users who visit YouTube each month. The company also said the number of creators earning five figures per year is up 35 percent, while the number of creators earning six figures a year is up 40 percent. It should be interesting to see how much of an effect these new features have on these numbers. We’ll let you know when we have more information to share on the subject.
