Google Might Unveil its Own Smartwatch with the Pixel 3 This Year

Browse By

As has been the case for a number of years, Google is expected to host a hardware event later this year where they’ll unveil new consumer devices. Of the new devices, we’re expecting to see the successors to last year’s Pixel 2 lineup likely named the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. And according to a new tweet, it looks like we could also see new earbuds and a Google-branded smartwatch.

According to infamous leaker Evan Blass on Twitter, Google will not only unveil new smartphones this year but also second-generation Pixel Buds and a Pixel-branded watch. The former isn’t that surprising considering we saw the previous generation debut last year, but the latter is a bit unexpected since we have yet to see an in-house wearable from Google.

While no specs were given for any of the devices mentioned, it’s pretty safe to say the Pixel watch will run Wear OS, Google’s smartwatch operating system formally known as Android Wear. It’s never been that clear the company is serious about its smartwatch initiatives so introducing its own hardware would prove it still has some interest in taking over the space like it once did. Of course, it would face steep competition with the Apple Watch (one of the most popular watches in the world), but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

We still have a good wait ahead of us until we see anything official from Google regarding these new devices, but with leaks like this, it looks like this could be a long summer.
