OnePlus recently announced it would include a notch on its next flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6. To the surprise of no one, not many people were excited. In fact, it’s created a sort of backlash against the company. This has led to today’s announcement that the device will let you hide its cutout and disguise it as a large top bezel.
According to CEO Pete Lau, the OnePlus 6 will receive a software update after the device initially launches that will allow users to blackout the notch and status bar. The feature was apparently considered as an initial highlight of the device but later scrapped due to the company thinking they could deliver an “exceptional full-screen experience” without it.
A black-out feature was seriously considered in the early stages of the development of the OnePlus 6. At the time we decided against adding this feature. We wanted to focus all of our time and resources on delivering an exceptional full-screen experience. I still believe the best way to experience the OnePlus 6 is using the full potential of the display. Recently many users have raised interest in having a black-out function. We respect your feedback, and would like to give everyone the ability to choose. This function will enable you to black out the background of the notifications and status bar. It will be added in a future software update released after the launch of the OnePlus 6. Look forward to sharing this new update with you all. Thank you for making us better!
In the end, it just goes to show you how much OnePlus cares about its community and its willingness to meet the criteria of its audience.
We don’t know when the software update will arrive for the OnePlus 6 that hides the notch let alone when the device will actually come out, but if we gain more information, we’ll obviously let you know.
