Essential has announced an update for its camera app on the Essential Phone that enables Auto HDR. With the mode, the camera will automatically adjust itself using HDR based on the scene presented in front of you. A good example would a sunset where, if you aim your camera at the skyline, the phone will likely kick HDR on for you. Then, when you look down at the ground with your camera, the mode will likely shut off. It’s another step Essential is taking to make its camera not awful, or at least lesser so.
We just released an update to Essential Camera App that adds Auto-HDR, a new HDR algorithm that improves camera performance and scene rendering, dynamic HDR and Flash indicators, and various stability fixes. Download it here: https://t.co/zXoZ765GHF pic.twitter.com/sxLcHEHJ5n

The camera is also getting updated with faster shutter speeds. The lag while taking HDR photos should also be reduced. Hopefully, with this update, the Essential Phone can be said to have one of the better camera offerings on the smartphone market.
Owners of the Essential Phone can download the update from the Play Store for free.
