Instagram is updating its app today and granting users the ability to type messages as part of their daily Stories. The feature works similarly to Facebook’s text post feature where you can select a different background for your text to appear over. There’s also a variety of different text fonts and styles you can apply as well.

Arguably, adding text-based content to a platform that primarily focuses on photos and videos is an odd choice. I’m sure Facebook wants Instagram to be as versitile as it can be, but straying this far away from the app’s flagship feature makes you wonder where the service goes from here. Could we someday see these types of text-based posts in our home feed? Only time will tell, and of course how users respond to today’s announcement.

The feature appears to be rolling out server-side so check your phone to see if the feature’s live yet for you. Both iOS and Android customers are seeing it.
