Razer has announced a new software update will begin rolling out later this month to the Razer Phone that will let users take full advantage of the media-consuming technology onboard. In other words, you’ll be able to watch Netflix in both HDR and with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The former has reached various smartphones in the past, but the latter marks one of the first supported by a smartphone.

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you’ll be able to watch TV shows and movies in High Dynamic Range, meaning more colors and better contrast will be present. As for audio, you’ll be able to experience Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound over either the onboard speakers or through headphones. However, you’ll need to use the headphone adapter that comes in the box with the device.

That being said, it should be interesting to see how the experience fairs in real-world usage. People who have bought the Razer Phone are undoubtedly tech nerds so they’ll likely enjoy the enhancements this update will provide. For others, you’ll simply notice overall better quality when playing back content from Netflix.

Right now, it appears only Netflix will support both formats, but expect further support for other streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video in the future.
