Essential is yet again pushing out a new software update to its users that enables a new portrait mode feature to naturally blur the background in a photo of a subject. We’ve seen similar features come from manufacturers like Samsung, Apple, Moto, and Google in the past, and now Essential wants in.

In the same update, Essential is also claiming it’s updated the actual picture quality of its cameras with “reduced compression to improve image quality.” Only real-world use will determine whether this update is actually worth installing since the PH-1’s cameras have famously performed badly in the past and not everything can get portrait mode right, so expect plenty of sample shots from Essential Phone users across the web.

To get the update, head over to the Play Store and check for updates.
