Tesla Unveils New Roadster and Breaks All the Records

During last night’s semi truck event, CEO Elon Musk made a surprise announcement: rolling out of the back of one of Tesla’s new trucks was the company’s latest Roadster, the successor to 2008’s model which was the starting ground for the company. The new Roadster costs $200,000, but I’m not sure if anyone will care because it breaks nearly every record you can imagine.

Let’s start with speed. Musk says the new Roadster can go from zero to 60 in as little as 1.9 seconds which breaks the previous 2-second record. Musk says it has a top speed of somewhere over 250 mph. Another record broken. there’s a 200kwh battery inside which can last for 620 miles on a single charge. Yet another record broken. Oh yeah, and it can cover a quarter mile in as little as 8.9 seconds. So $200,000 for this vehicle is quite a deal, especially when considering its competitors cost four to five times this price.

But that’s not all. The new Roadster can also sit four people, it’s a convertible, there’s all-wheel drive, and three engines with one in the front and two around back. Overall, this car’s insane.

As for some specifics surrounding the car’s price, Musk says the first 1,000 units of the new Roadster will be Founder’s Series models and cost $250,000 with a $50,000 deposit required up front. Standard retail units of the car will cost $200,000. Production won’t beginĀ until 2020, so since the model demoed at the event was pre-production, the vehicle’s specs could change and get even better. We’ll, of course, keep you updated.
