Update: Motorola has issued a press statement which announces the addition of the Moto G4 to its list of devices getting upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo. Marketing claims on the device’s product pages announced the software update even though Moto had no original plans to support it. Therefore, the G4 isn’t at the top of its priority list, so users of the handset will likely need to wait a pretty lengthy amount of time before Oreo actually reaches them. The full statement can be read below in addition to the original article.

It’s been brought to our attention that there were some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for Moto G4 Plus. This was an oversight on our part and we apologize for this miscommunication. It’s our general practice for the Moto G family to get one major OS upgrade per device, but it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading Moto G4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit it into our upgrade schedule.

Original article: Motorola has published its list of devices that will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo in the future. There aren’t any exact timeframes given, but the first devices should begin to receive the update “starting this fall.” Ideally, unlocked variants in the below list should get the OS upgrade initially.

Here’s which Moto-branded phones are getting Oreo.

  • Moto Z2 Force
  • Moto Z2 Play
  • Moto Z Force Droid
  • Moto Z Droid
  • Moto Z
  • Moto Z Play Droid
  • Moto Z Play
  • Moto X4
  • Moto G5
  • Moto G5 Plus
  • Moto G5S
  • Moto G5S Plus

As you can see, that’s a lot of phones that have all received Android Nougat. However, the Moto G4 isn’t on that list, so owners of that handset will be stuck on Nougat for the rest of the device’s existence. Therefore, it may be worth it to upgrade to the G5 or other Moto handset to keep the software fresh. Of course, security patches will likely continue to reach the G4 and G4 Plus, but in terms of actual OS upgrades, there won’t be anymore.
