During the day before IFA 2017, Lenovo is announcing a partnership between them and Disney to deliver a new augmented reality-powered Star Wars experience that will go on sale this holiday season. Called Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, the experience comes with a Lenovo Mirage AR headset, Tracking Beacon, and Lightsaber controller for interacting with various different games and levels throughout the platform.

Specifically, users will need to download the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges app to their compatible smartphone, slide their phone into the AR headset and place the Tracking Beacon on the floor to track movement during gameplay. Once everything is set up, you’ll then need to grab the Lightsaber which acts like your controller in the experience and allows you to battle like Luke Skywalker. Through light-tracking technology, the headset will track the Lightsaber and form a beam on top of it which is then used for interacting with in-game content. There’s even haptic feedback in the controller to make things seem a bit more real.

And remember, this isn’t a cheap VR demo of Star Wars. This is augmented reality which will place characters and objects in the real world and allow the user to interact with them as if they were standing in front of them. It’s a true experience that would normally be present at things like special events or gatherings, but in your kid’s bedroom instead.


As for games, Lenovo says there will be three different elements: Lightsaber Battles, Strategic Combat, and Holochess. The first allows players to “train against legendary dark side villains like Kylo Ren and Darth Vader;” the second lets “players marshal the forces of the Republic, Rebel Alliance, and Resistance against the might of the Separatists, Empire, and First Order in epic battles across their living room floors;” and the third lets users play the famed game first debuted in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. “It has now been brought to life in Jedi Challenges. Fans can direct their holographic alien pieces across the board, wrestling for territory and control.”
