Report Details What Apple’s Doing with the Software on the iPhone 8

A question that’s been swirling the minds of many anxious to get a glimpse at the upcoming iPhone 8 is what Apple will be doing to compliment the device’s hardware. In other words, no one knows what the software on the phone will be like since it won’t have a Home button, a larger and taller screen, and a weird notch at the top. According to Bloomberg who has reportedly seen images of the device, Apple’s gonna be making some major changes to compensate for the new hardware.

For instance, one of the first things Apple had to do was compensate for the loss of the Home button. So rather double-pressing on a dedicated area on the iPhone 8, users will be able to swipe up from a “thin, software bar in lieu of the home button” and access the multitasking menu which will be “redesigned to appear like a series of standalone cards that can be swiped through, versus the stack of cards on current iPhones.” We have no idea what this might look like yet, so stay tuned.

To unlock the phone, Bloomberg says users will need to swipe up from the software bar to the middle of the screen from the lock screen. You can do the same thing to close an app and go back home. The Dock at the bottom of the screen will reportedly be designed like the iPad’s in iOS 11, although there’s no word on whether users will be able to add more than four apps to it. The notch at the top of the screen will also not be hidden and, instead, apps will feature a cutout at the top as long as it doesn’t have a black background. For those wondering, to the left of the notch is where a clock will sit while the right side will house cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity alongside your battery life.

Developer Steve T-S on Twitter created the following mockups based on what Bloomberg describes in their report in collaboration with @Charavel.

While Bloomberg‘s report seems convincing, it’s still not official, and anything could change between now and the time Apple announces the iPhone 8. Of course, with September being a matter of days away at this point, we don’t have much more time to wait until we learn everything there is to know about the redesigned iPhone.
