Microsoft Releases Preview of Redesigned Skype App for Windows 10 PCs

Microsoft recently gave Skype a major redesign that gave the service modern looks that would appeal to a younger crowd. They even did a Stories thing which probably wasn’t needed in an app like Skype, but whatever. Now, that same experience is rolling out as a preview to Windows 10 PC owners. If you wanna test drive it, you can download it here.

Specifically, this new version of Skype has features like @mentions, message reactions, a new notification panel, a new chat media gallery, better group calls, and a customizable UI based on your selected color scheme. Microsoft has also optimized the app’s layout for larger screens because if you have a PC, you’ll probably wanna actually use the big display that comes with it to its entirety.

These changes are currently shipping for users of the desktop version of Skype, not the version present in the Windows Store. You’ll need to have Windows 10 version 1511 or older to run the preview version of Skype. The reason is due to MS thinking you’ll probably only use the Universal Windows Platform version of the app. Yes, that sounds complicated, I know. Just check my Twitter thread I started with the guys from Neowin if you need help.
