Yesterday during the annual VidCon 2017 conference and convention, YouTube announced a variety of new updates and new content for viewers to enjoy. The video sharing platform also announced some changes to how they handle multiple video formats.
For starters, YouTube Red is getting all-new content in 2017, specifically more than 40 new shows and movies. A trailer was put together, debuted, and is available to watch below. It previews 12 new originals coming to the platform during the course of this year, so expect them to be available for streaming soon.
The YouTube app for iOS and Android will also soon adapt to the type of content you’re watching based on its position (vertical or horizontal) and aspect ratio (e.g. 16:9, 21:9, 1:1). The video player will soon become dynamic to adjust to different video formats which should come in handy when you’re viewing content, for instance, shot on a smartphone or originally intended for Instagram.
YouTube will also soon make sharing videos with your friends easier with a fifth button on the bottom bar of the mobile app allowing for quicker access to the feature. You know, if you one of the dozen people that actually use the function.
As for YouTube TV, not much was spoken about, but the service is indeed expanding to five new cities over the course of the coming weeks. Dallas-Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne and Charlotte will all soon get YouTube TV. This joins New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago on the growing list of available cities for streaming.
In addition, YouTube is introducing a new VR-ready video format they hope to bring to the masses. Called VR180, it allows creators to shoot 180-degree videos and allow them to playback on smartphones and VR headsets. Compatible cameras will also be introduced from partners like LG, Lenovo, and Yi.
All of this comes as YouTube says they receive 1.5 billion logged in viewers each month. In other words, one in five people have YouTube accounts and they watch YouTube every month. That’s a pretty big milestone, and the company hopes to further their accomplishments with today’s news and other announcements and changes going into the future.
