In a new interview with Bloomberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook officially confirmed that the company is working on autonomous car software. Cook stated that they’re “focusing on autonomous systems” rather simply building a car. However, that doesn’t seem to be off the table just yet.
When asked whether Apple may one day manufacture its own car, Cook had the following to say.
“We’ll see where it takes us,” Cook said. “We’re not really saying from a product point of view what we will do.”
Therefore, we may still see an Apple-branded vehicle driving down the road at some point in the future. For now, we’ll have to stick with autonomous systems with the Apple logo instead.
Speaking of which, this may be Apple’s most intense effort yet, at least from an AI standpoint. Cook stated that building autonomous car systems is extremely important and may be “the mother of all AI projects.” “Probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on,” he continued.
If you recall, it was originally rumored that Apple was developing its own car, but this ambition was soon axed and replaced with the company’s current AI efforts. It’s been Silicon Valley’s least kept secret that Apple has shown interest in the car landscape, but it’s still nice to hear a little confirmation about such a frequently spoken about rumor. Now if Timmy would spill the beans on some deets about the next iPhone.
