Zack Snyder Leaves Justice League After Family Tragedy

Things have gotten a bit rough in regards to the upcoming Justice League film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has lost its director, Zack Snyder, due to him experiencing a family tragedy. Avengers director and writer Joss Whedon will take over.

Unfortunately, Snyder’s daughter, Autumn, committed suicide at age 20 back in March which ultimately went unknown until today. Deborah Snyder, Zack’s wife, will also be taking a break from producing to compensate this sudden loss.

Snyder says after her death, he was eager to get back in the director’s chair to finish Justice League. “In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it,” says Snyder during an interview earlier this week. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization … I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

Despite originally planning to push the film’s release date back, Snyder has told Warner Bros. that he insists Justice League be released on November 17th like originally decided. Interestingly, Synder originally planned to make this tragedy as private as possible, but he soon realized this wasn’t the proper decision to make.

“Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public,” he says. “I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is … I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.”

Before she took her own life, Autumn had written a sci-fi novel in the first person which the Snyders would love to see published someday, with all proceeds gong towards a charity. “In the end, she didn’t make it, but her character does, and I think there would be something cathartic for people,” says Zack.

While Snyder notes many fans may be worried about Justice League and it’s turnout thanks to this unfortunate occurrence, the director notes it’s just a movie in the end.“I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie, but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.”
