Samsung Confirms They’ll Re-Release the Galaxy Note 7

Written by:

We all know by now what went down in regards to Samsung’s ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. A report a few months ago hinted at it’s return as a refurbished smartphone, while a second rumor also indicated the comeback. This would be assisted by a smaller, less-explosive battery. Now, we know for sure this is happening as Samsung themselves have confirmed it. We just don’t know whether it’ll have a smaller batter cell or not.

This news comes as Samsung announces initiatives they’ll be taking to ensure that each and every Note 7 is recycled properly “in an environmentally-friendly manner.”

Samsung Electronics has established three principles to ensure that Galaxy Note 7 devices are recycled and processed in an environmentally-friendly manner.

First, devices shall be considered to be used as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable.

Second, salvageable components shall be detached for reuse.

Third, processes such as metals extraction shall be performed using environmentally friendly methods.

Touching more on the phone’s return, Samsung says markets where refurbished Note 7s will be “dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand.” As for other Note 7s that won’t return to market, Samsung says they’ll have companies who essentially specialize in taking phones apart rip out components such as semiconductors and camera modules and use them for “test sample production purposes.” In addition, for left over components, Samsung says they’ll extract elements like copper, nickel, gold and silver by gaining assistance from other companies who specialize in these services and do so in an environmentally safe way. They’ll also be joining the EU’s R&D and test efforts to develop new eco-friendly processing methods.

In case you’re wondering, the Note 7 won’t be returning to the US, according to The Verge.

We have yet to hear more details as to what changes Samsung will make to the Note 7 to make it safe. We’ll of course let you know when more information is obtained.
