Spider-Man’s Venom is about to become a movie star. According to Variety, the villain is scheduled to be featured in its own spin-off film currently set for release October 5th, 2018. It’ll mark the character’s second time appearing in theaters after Topher Grace’s portrayal back in 2007 for Spider-Man 3.
Variety says Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner will be handling the script for the yet-to-be-titled Venom film, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach sitting in the producers’ chairs. It’s not clear yet who will play the symbiote covered alien or who will direct, but these details should pop up eventually.
If you recall, Sony had originally planned to release a Venom film alongside The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a Sinister Six spin-off. But when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopped at the box office and rendered the future of the studio’s other plans unclear, Sony was sent back to the drawing board in hopes of reaching their original goals. Since then, Sony and Marvel announced the addition of Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe which will allow the web slinger to play a role in other Marvel sagas like Iron Man and, namely, Captain America (in other words, Civil War). As a result, Marvel confirmed a new Spidey spinoff with Tom Holland portraying the character which will be released come July, therefore leaving a 15-month gap between Marvel and Sony’s upcoming pictures. Whether they’ll eventually be incorporated into each other is unclear, but it doesn’t seem likely considering the two studios’ histories in this regard.
