Report: HTC is Launch a Mobile VR Headset This Year

A fresh report out of CNET depicts an interview with HTC’s chief financial officer Chia-lin Chang where it’s stated HTC will introduce a mobile VR headset this year. The headset will reportedly be compatible with the new U Ultra handset but won’t be something as basic as Samsung’s Gear VR.

Instead, the company will likely take some cues from their popular Vive headset. It’s unclear exactly what the headset will feature, however a similar approach LG took with their 360 VR with a dedicated screen may be taken in this case. All we know is it’s somewhere between not as straightforward as the Gear VR and not as complicated as the Vive.

My best guess would be rather rigging the headset to a PC, you’d plug it into the U Ultra which offers plenty of performance for VR thanks to the Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. I mean, it’s just for personal use anyway and not for holograms or PC-level apps so you should be good with just the phone and headset.

Of course, HTC only says the headset will be compatible with the U Ultra. They didn’t say it’ll remain exclusive to the phone, so there’s a possibility other phones with similar specs may also work with it. We don’t know this for sure as we’re really picking apart this interview, but at least according to Chang, HTC has “good plan” for their first mainstream VR headset built for consumers.

“We have a good plan in terms of combining mobility with VR,” said Chia-lin Chang, HTC’s president of global sales, in an interview at the HTC U series launch event in Singapore.

HTC hinted that the headset would launch by the end of the year, so keep your eyes peeled, people.
