It was rumored a little while ago that Facebook was developing an app for your television likely focused on video streaming. Now, the social network has released a blog post confirming this rumor as true.
Finally, we’ve heard that people want more options for how and where they watch Facebook videos. Today we’re announcing a new Facebook video app for TV, which will roll out soon to app stores for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Samsung Smart TV, with more platforms to come.
According to Facebook, the app will allow users to stream Facebook videos “on a bigger screen” than normal. Content includes videos “shared by friends or Pages you follow, top live videos from around the world, and recommended videos based on your interests.” The company seems pretty ambitious about this new app and it’s capabilities, however it’s unclear just how much different it will be compared to the already available Facebook app for TV which currently lets its users stream various videos found across the social network.
Additionally, Facebook will let you save videos for later on your mobile device and watch them when it’s convenient on your TV. No timetable for an official release was noted, but FB says the roll out will begin “soon.”
This all comes as Facebook tries pushing themselves as a video platform rather just somewhere your grandparents track your cousins. In that context, a dedicated video app may be just what they need to achieve the feet, but if it does exactly what the current Facebook app does, there’s bound to be some type of confusion amongst users as to which app they should use.
