Back in April 2016, word came in that James Cameron was planning on shooting four Avatar sequels at the same time, an extreme undertaking for one human being regardless whether they’re considered legendary or not. Radio silence has been the case between then and now, but over the weekend, the famed director spoke with The Daily Beast to whom he confirmed that the films will begin shooting this coming August. He said so in response to a question regarding how Avatar 2 was coming.
“The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5. I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”
Hopefully, these films aren’t just a waste of time and are actually enjoyable. I mean, by shooting four films in the same story line with different schedules scattered all over the place, the overall value of the movies may decrease, therefore leaving fans of the franchise wanting more. The original Avatar, released back in 2009, featured staggering special effects and technological advances that movies at that time weren’t doing. Therefore, if Cameron and his team can bring something similar with the future films, it all may be worth it in the end. If not, let me say this: James sat in jail for a long time to accomplish nothing.
The next four sequels, Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5, will all come out in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023, respectively. To be more specific, Avatar 2 will be released on December 21st, 2018.
