Walmart today announced the retirement of their premium subscription service ShippingPass which offered customers free two-day shipping on their website for $49 per year. Coming in to replace it? Free two-day shipping for all, making the company look more pleasing than leading competitors, specifically Amazon.
Thanks to Walmart’s new free two-day shipping, customers can now get their items delivered within 48 hours entirely for free, with the exception of a $35 minimum on your total. Currently, Amazon offers the same thing for customers, but you must be a Prime subscriber. Of course, for Prime members, there’s no minimum, but it still costs you $99 per year for the service nevertheless.
A variety of items from Walmart will be eligible for free two-day shipping, “including household essentials such as baby necessities, pet products, food, like cereal and peanut butter, cleaning supplies and beauty favorites, as well as top electronics and toys.” In addition, same-day store pickup is also still being offered alongside Online Grocery Pickup at 4,600 and 600 stores, respectively.
As it looks now, for Amazon to keep their head in the game, it’s about time they offer online shoppers a new perk Walmart customers don’t already have access to. Extending their one-day shipping to other areas may be a nice step forward, but it’s not clear how well it would compete will overall free two-day shipping for all. Therefore, if Amazon marketers are reading this, get to work. Walmart’s bound to take another jab at some point, and it’ll be up to you to decide whether to suffer the blow or come back with something stronger.
