LG is Debuting a Levitating Speaker at CES 2017

When you think of speakers, you may think of a giant black rectangle that sits under your TV. However, speakers have gotten prettier and cooler looking over recent years, and since levitating anything is also cool, it only makes sense to create a levitating speaker, something many Kickstarter projects and possibly stockings this Christmas consist of.

But rather going completely mainstream, levitating speakers have mainly been considered novelty. In other words, they’re something you turn on just because it floats and collected far too much dust from the last time you used it a few months back. However, if a new announcement by LG is of any indication, the levitating speaker may soon get its time in the spotlight…

In a new press release, LG has unveiled the PJ9 Levitating Speaker, a new speaker that’ll receive a formal announcement come CES 2017. This accessory is simply a speaker that levitates thanks to electromagnets within its base and gives off a 360degree omnidirectional sound with plenty of low-end thanks to a dedicated subwoofer. LG says the PJP also uses Dual Passive Radiator technology “to reproduce flush mid-range tones and crisp highs.”

The PJ9 creates its stunning visual effect using powerful electromagnets housed inside the Levitation Station to give the speaker its unique trait of being untouched by any surface or wires when playing. At the core is a 360degree omnidirectional speaker with turbine blade-inspired design and deep bass courtesy of the subwoofer embedded inside the Levitation Station. The PJ9 also features Dual Passive Radiator technology to reproduce flush mid-range tones and crisp highs.

There’s also IPX7 certification, so feel free to take your LG-branded levitating speaker outside.

In terms of battery life, LG says the built-in cell lasts up to 10 hours on a full charge, and when it begins to die (get this), the speaker begins to float down without user’s content and starts to wirelessly charge. This is a pretty smart idea to eliminate the constant need for wires, so it’ll be interesting to see just how this works.

Not much else is known at this time, but we do know that LG claims the Levitating Speaker will stay put while it’s floating and not become wobbly or potentially fall. Whether this is true is anyone’s guess at this point so only real-world testing will offer confirmation.

Brian Kwon, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company, had this to say regarding the PJP Levitating Speaker.

“Our latest addition to our growing lineup of premium wireless audio devices is not only eye-catching but also communicates the message that LG is serious about bringing something different to the table,” said Brian Kwon, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “We are absolutely dedicated to exploring new concepts and to pioneering innovative designs for its advanced audio products for consumers around the world, and the PJ9 is the latest example of this commitment.”
