Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 835 and Quick Charge 4.0 to Provide ‘5 Hrs Charge in 5 Minutes’

Qualcomm today took the wraps off their latest flagship chipset known as the Snapdragon 835. This processor follows this year’s Snapdragon 820 and 821 which can be found in a cast majority of flagship devices released this year.

Getting into the nitty-gritty, the 835 is based on a 10nm manufacturing process which was the result of a partnership with Samsung. To put this into perspective, the Snapdragon 820 is based on a 14nm process.

Thanks to it’s smaller size, the 835 will be able to deliver better battery efficiency while also increase in power, making smartphones that take advantage of the chip faster and last longer on a single charge. However, running out of charge early if you tend to use your phone a lot shouldn’t be a problem any longer as long as there’s an 835 inside as Qualcomm has also announced their latest-generation Quick Charge technology that’s compatible with the chipset…

Called Quick Charge 4.0, the company promises “5 hours of use from just 5 minutes of charging.” It may be a bit hard to live up to this claim, but it should give you an idea of how fast it really is.

If you’re a spec nerd, it’s worth noting that Qualcomm specifically says the new Quick Charge 4.0 technology is 20% faster than Quick Charge 3.0 and is 30% more efficient. In addition, more cables, USB-C protocols (including USB Power Drive), and Google’s new USB-C charging specs are all supported, making 4.0 more versatile and widely available across devices and accessories. 4.0 is also safer thanks to its precise measurement of voltage and current going in and out alongside how much heat is being distributed by charging. There’s also a new technology built inside to protect devices from overcharging, something that will come in handy if you tend to charge your phone over night.

While we don’t have specific details on the Snapdragon 835 (such as how fast it is) or Quick Charge 4.0 (like what it’s exactly compatible with other than the new 835) as of yet, we expect to hear more in the near future. Expect the new technologies to make their way into flagship devices starting in 2017.
