MTV’s Making a TV Series Based on H.G. Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’

A new report by Deadline has shared some new details on an upcoming television series over on MTV. Teen Wolf writer Andrew Cochran and creator/executive producer Jeff Davis alongside The Firm’s Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinetz are currently working on a series based on H.G. Wells’ world-famous novel War of the Worlds. Casting and plot lines are currently unknown, however Deadline describes the show as a “contemporary drama series.” I’m just praying they don’t turn this book into a teenage love story with a bunch of shirtless Taylor Lautners (what? I’m scared of Teen Wolf writers)…

According to Deadline, a War of the Worlds television series has been a passion project of Josh Barry’s for quite some time as his grandfather, Gene Barry, starred in a 1953 film adoption. Since then, the first television series based on the book began airing on CBS in the ’80s as a sequel-type story to the 1953 film, however it ultimately failed thanks to poor viewership. Hence, the show’s behind-the-scenes crew hopes people will enjoy this new show.

Again, not much more information is shared (not even an expected release date), so stay tuned.

The book, first published in 1898, was first adopted as a radio broadcast by Orson Welles in 1938 who read bullet points from the novel like they were actual breaking news. This ultimately led to (surprise!) a panic among the public which caused Welles to come out and say it was fake. A film adoption of War of the Worlds took place in 1953 which took home an Oscar for Best Effects, while a reboot directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise was released in 2005 which met good reviews.
