Confirmed: Lenovo’s Tango-Enabled PHAB2 Pro to Arrive in November

Remember Lenovo’s PHAB2 Pro? Back in June, it was unveiled at an event where the company stated that it was the first smartphone with Google’s augmented reality platform Tango built in. That was great and all, but we the people needed to know when it would come out. Thankfully, Lenovo told us the device would be available for $499 in September, however this statement ultimately never became reality as for some reason, Lenovo decided to delay the launch. Later, though, we did hear the handset would land in “fall”, but that didn’t help much.

Now, according to a new report by CNET, Google’s head of VR, Clay Bavor, has confirmed that Lenovo’s PHAB2 Pro will be arriving this coming November.

Though the phone was originally supposed to ship in the summer, and later got delayed to September and then a nebulous “fall,” Clay Bavor, head of VR at Google, confirmed to CNET that the phone will go on sale this November. […] The Phab2 Pro should sell for $499 unlocked in the United States, equivalent to £345 or AU$672.

At this time, we don’t have an exact date on when the PHAB2 Pro will launch, but at least we’ve practically got the whole month of October to start guessing.

So by now you may be wondering, “Why keep delaying this thing?” And while we don’t know the exact answer, our best guess would be for development purposes. This past summer when the handset was shown off, the presenters were experiencing some serious bugs while trying to demo the software and AR capabilities. Even those who attended the event and tried out the PHAB2 Pro got bad feedback from the experience. Therefore, Lenovo may have been pushing the launch of this device until the software was perfect for the consumer market. Of course, we don’t know this for sure, but it sounds reasonable enough to be correct.
