Snapchat Made Sunglasses That Records Video and Syncs to Your Phone

Via a Wall Street Journal article, Snaps Inc. (formerly Snapchat Inc.) has announced their very first piece of hardware which coincides with their ever-so-popular social media app Snapchat. They’re called Spectacles, and they’re sunglasses with cameras inside.

No seriously, I’m not lying.

By tapping a button on the side of the Spectacles, you can record up to 10 seconds of looping video that’s stored wirelessly on your iPhone or Android device. The reason for cameras attached to sunglasses is to make your Snaps and videos more immersive and to make memories feel like they’re replaying right in front of your eyes. And in all reality, this sounds pretty on point as when you watch videos play back on your device, you’ll see exactly what your eyes saw at some point. If only these things were VR enabled…

CEO of Snaps Inc. Evan Spiegel (obviously) got a chance to test out the Spectacles while they were in preproduction stages, and he describes his experience just like we described your potential experience above with these sunglasses.

He remembers testing a prototype in early 2015 while hiking with his fiancée, supermodel Miranda Kerr. “It was our first vacation, and we went to Big Sur for a day or two. We were walking through the woods, stepping over logs, looking up at the beautiful trees. And when I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes—it was unbelievable. It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”

While all the functionality of the Spectacles sounds legit, the style of the sunglasses don’t look all that stellar. For starters, you’re getting rounded lenses which don’t seem will compliment many people’s faces. You’re also getting a pretty funky design that looks like it belongs in the early 2000s or ’90s on the heads of grandmas everywhere. Of course (at least according to the video above), there’s a blue option available for those of you who don’t dress like your 60, but I’m still not sure who’d buy these things while factoring in the design.

Nevertheless, if you’re interested in buying Spectacles, they’re gonna run you $129. Availability isn’t currently known, but stay tuned.
