Apple has officially announced their new upcoming show entitled Planet of the Apps. And yes, that pun was intended.

The show – which isn’t known if it’ll air on TV or be exclusive to the internet – is basically about developers and the apps they’re making. This type of series was rumored a while ago to be released, and now it looks like it’s finnally happening. Planet of the Apps is also supposed to be a competition-type program, so as The Verge notes, think Shark Tank meets The Bachelor.

We don’t yet know the exact format of the show, but given it’s a competition about apps, it can’t hold too many surprises. Think Shark Tank with fewer sharks and more viable product pitches. Or an episode of The Bachelor, where instead of wooing an eligible young beefcake, contestants will compete to impress Eddy Cue. (Disclaimer: there’s no indication that Cue is going to appear on the show, and whether or not he can be deemed a ‘beefcake’ is entirely a matter of taste.)

In addition, Apple notes that Planet of the Apps is not just a show, but a “launch pad and accelerator for exceptional developers.” These “exceptional developers” aren’t selected exclusively by anyone or even Apple. As long as your 18 or older, are a developer, and have or are planning on building an app for either iOS, macOS, watchOS, or tvOS, you can apply to be featured on the show. Those accepted into the series will have the change to receive the following:

  1. Mentorship: Hands-on guidance from some of the world’s best experts in tech and entertainment.
  2. Funding: Those who make it to the final round will meet with top-tier VCs investing up to $10m over the course of the season.
  3. Marketing and Promotion: Featured placement in the App Store at the end of the show. Also, the potential to reach millions of viewers around the world on Apple platforms.

Do note that only 100 applicants will be accepted into Planet of the Apps, so don’t get your feelings hurt if you don’t get in.

A press statement via 9to5Mac by the co-CEOs of the production company behind Planet of the Apps says the following:

Over 2 million apps are available on the App Store, with new apps published every day. Planet of the Apps will give app creators the chance to break through and share their ideas with the world. This is an exciting format that taps into what is driving culture today. We can’t wait to see the groundbreaking ideas accepted for the show grow into viable businesses.

Los Angelas, California will be the location of filming Planet of the Apps, while later this year through early 2017 is the time frame of filming. Applicants must have at least a functioning beta of their application they’ll share with Apple by October 21st. You also must submit your application to be featured on the show by August 26th, 2016.
