Microsoft’s Annoying Windows 10 Upgrade Prompt is Finally Getting Toned Down

Yesterday, we reported that a woman in California sued Microsoft over a forced Windows 10 upgrade which ultimately failed and left her with a slow-to-a-crawl PC she just couldn’t use. Thankfully she won the case, however she’s not alone in the long list of people who have received forced upgrades to Microsoft’s latest OS, including one meteorologist who tried to go with it during a live broadcast.

You’d think by now Microsoft would’ve acknowledged just how annoying their “Upgrade to Windows 10” prompt really is. However, up until now, nothing has been done to try to resolve this issue. Only slight tweaks to the UI of the upgrade panel have been performed which, yet again, confused the heck out of people and still forced upgrades on them. But now, Microsoft says in a statement to The Verge they’re redesigning the prompt so it’s a lot less confusing to everyone and it doesn’t force the upgrade on you. You’ll have the clear choice of accepting or declining the offer.

Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we’ve received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing. We’ve been working hard to incorporate their feedback and this week, we’ll roll out a new upgrade experience with clear options to upgrade now, schedule a time, or decline the free offer.

Here’s a look at the new design.

As you can see, you have the option to either upgrade at the moment, choose a different time, or decline the offer all together. This will surely be welcome by the public who haven’t upgraded yet and don’t want to. Before, you had to click the “Red X” to get rid of this prompt, however the upgrade was still forced onto you. Now, just click “Decline” and you’ll never see it again.

Innovation at it’s finest.
