Remember the Freedom 251? Okay, maybe not. Do you remember the $4 smartphone? Yeah? Great! So that’s the Freedom 251, and according to its manufacturer Ringing Bells, it’s supposed to begin shipping this Thursday, June 30th.
The first units of the $4 Android 5.1 Lollipop handset that will begin shipping on the 30th are numbered at 200,000, while over 70 million requests of the device have been made. CEO Mohit Goel stated in an interview that this would be all they could deliver as of now with a second registration period to occur after the 200,000 have been shipped. This is to get more customers for the Freedom 251 on board in case they missed the first registration period which occured back in February.
To not lose any more money, Goel stated that they’ve partnered with software makers to load their apps onto the Freedom 251 which works out so Ringing Bells gets paid for doing so. The reason I say any more money is due to the fact that Ringing Bells has said they are experiencing a loss of about 140 to 150 rupees per unit of the 251 and seeks help from government. This is probably due to their recycling of parts for the 251 and how they get the price down to just $4. Ringing Bells made headlines a while ago after it was discovered that they were simply covering the logos of the $60 Adcom Ikon 4s with whiteout and reselling the “disguised” units. Of course this didn’t really work, so after a police investigation, they were able to begin selling the phone again, however now it looks entirely different and appears to not be the Ikon 4s any longer (see image above).
Oh well. At least we now know people are gonna actually get this thing was wasn’t just cheated out $4.
In case you forgot, the Freedom 251 features a 4-inch display, a 1.3GHz processor by an unnamed company, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera with flash, a 3.2MP front camera, 8GB of storage, and an 1800mAh battery.
