James Cameron: All 4 Avatar Sequels Will Be Shot at Once

The world went nuts just a few days ago when it learned that there won’t be just one but four new Avatar sequels with each being directed by James Cameron, the one who also directed the first film. Each movie is set to come out in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023 respectively, and however there’s room between those dates to shoot other films set to debut in the franchise, Cameron said that he’ll be shooting every sequel at once.

“It’s not back-to-back. It’s really all one big production. It’s more the way you would shoot a miniseries. So we’ll be shooting across all [Avatar scripts] simultaneously. So Monday I might be doing a scene from Movie Four, and Tuesday I’m doing a scene from Movie One. … We’re working across, essentially, eight hours of story. It’s going to be a big challenge to keep it all fixed in our minds, exactly where we are, across that story arc at any given point. It’s going to be probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. I’m sure the actors will be challenged by that as well. It’s like, ‘No, no, no, no, this person hasn’t died yet, so you’re still in this phase of your life.’ It’s a saga. It’s like doing all three Godfather films at the same time.”

This is a tremendous undertaking for one human being. It’ll be interesting to see just how he executes this plan even though he gives a pretty good explanation above. It’s also gonna be interesting to see the quality of each movie since the actor’s and crew’s schedules will be all over the place. Let’s remember that a lot of things are easier said than done, especially when making four movies at once. I’m sure he’ll have his whole team backing him up, but nonetheless it’s a huge task that could only be pulled off by many people constantly working together.

If I were him, however, I’d film the first sequel until it goes into editing, then I’d begin filming the next with the process looping the same way for the remaining two. But unfortunately, my name is James nor Cameron and I don’t have any experience directing feature films.

If you agree with my method, however, let me know in the comments.
