Twitter Could Extend Their Tweet Limit to 10,000 Characters

A new report has made it’s way online stating that Twitter, the multi-billion dollar social media platform, could be gearing up for one of the biggest changes in company history.

In the report, there are claims that the company has an inside project they’re working on codenamed “Beyond 140” which consists of expanding the allowed character limit per tweet from 140 to possibly something like 10,000, which, if you ask me, is way too much. However, Twitter did raise the limit of allowed characters in private messages to 10,000, but that makes sense. If I wanna message someone, I wanna be able to say as much as I want. But in a tweet? …

According to Recode

Twitter is building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit, and the company is targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. Twitter is currently considering a 10,000 character limit, according to these sources.

For me, 140 characters isn’t enough sometimes, but I like that because it forces me to keep my tweets short and sweet. Wasn’t that Twitter’s goal with the 140 character limit? To get information in a short and sweet manner, hence allowing users to only use up to 140 characters in their tweets?

I can see, however, the other side to this. See, Twitter was originally a news platform that could deliver news from around the world to you in a pleasant manner, and they still advertise themselves as that. A way to get the news you care about in short and sweet notifications on your mobile phone, tablet, or computer. Do you ever look at Twitter’s home page? Do you ever look at the top of it? Because here’s what it says:

They want people to curate a news feed about the stuff they care about, and in order to not hog up your life with long paragraphs and junk, they limited the messages sent out on Twitter to 140 characters. If you use Twitter the intended way, you’ll understand. If you use it to send out pictures of your dog eating cat food, you won’t.

And that’s what Twitter’s focused on now. More and more people use Twitter to send out news about themselves, and they have so much to write, they get furious at Twitter for not letting them send out more than a few words. And that’s why Twitter is considering expanding the character limit. Personally, I think around 1,000 characters is enough for a tweet, because at least that way they could still hold on to their original purpose while still pleasing users. 10,000 Characters is way too extensive. I don’t wanna scroll through Twitter on my phone and have to read a 1,000 word news article right in the app. I wanna read the title of the article, click on the link attached, and read it wherever the web takes me according to the link. But what do I know, right? I’m not Kim Kardashian. I’m not a celebrity. And I rarely send out tweets.
