tvOS 9.1 Now Available for Apple TV 4

Following the releases of iOS 9.2 and OS X El Capitan 10.11.2, Apple has released an update to the Apple TV 4, tvOS 9.1 It’s the second update the TV has seen since tvOS 9.0.1 came out a month ago. The update can be accessed by going to the Settings channel in the System section near the bottom. From here look for Software Updates under Maintenance, then select Update Software and Download and Install. tvOS 9.1 will download and install, and require a system restart to complete.

The update doesn’t include release notes, but so far what has been confirmed in the new software is Siri support for Apple Music, allowing users to search for songs on the streaming music service using your voice via Apple’s personal assistant much like you can with Siri on mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

Alongside this feature in the software is the added support for Apple’s Remote app for iOS. This feature simply didn’t work in the previous versions of the software which frustrated users, but now it seems that it in fact does do it’s job. The app allows users to use their iPhones or iPads to enter text into their Apple TVs rather using the included remote to point-and-shoot at text on a virtual keyboard on your TV, which, if you’ve never tried it, is a pain in the neck. watchOS 2.1, which was also released today, also has access to a Remote app which turns your Apple Watch into a D-pad which can control your Apple TV.

Bluetooth keyboard support for entering complicated passwords especially at setup, and Apple’s Podcasts app, which has been seen in promotional material, have not seen their debut in the latest update for the Apple TV, but hopefully will in the betas of tvOS 9.2.
