iPhone 6S 16GB Storage Configuration Confirmed Alongside 7000 Series Aluminum Body

The iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone with a minimum storage configuration of 16GB, and it looks like Apple isn’t letting up on it. Today, 9to5Mac has confirmed that Apple will, yet again, include a 16GB storage option in their next lineup of iPhones, arriving on September 9th. Factor in the rumors of 4K picture and video support on the new iPhones and you’ll begin to wonder why Apple won’t make the minimum storage option 32GB considering that definition of photography requires quite some space.

The prices of the new iPhone will be the same as last year’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, with the iPhone 6S coming in at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 64GB, and $399 for 128GB of storage, and the 6S Plus at $299 for 16GB, $399 for 64GB, and $499 for 128GB, all with a 2-year contract on each supported carrier.

The new lineup of iPhones will change, however, with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus becoming the flagships, the 6 and 6 Plus becoming Apple’s mid-range option starting at $99, and the 5S becoming the entry-level “free” option. The 5C will be discontinued entirely as the 4S was when Apple introduced the iPhone 6.

Along with the 16GB storage configuration confirmation, the rumor of 7000 series aluminum being used in the new iPhone has also been confirmed. This type of casing can already be found in the Apple Watch Sport. In case you were wondering, here’s how Apple describes the stronger variant to the iPhone 6’s aluminum body:

For Apple Watch, we created a new alloy of 7000 Series aluminum that’s 60 percent stronger than standard alloys. Yet it’s very light. Together with the Ion-X glass covering the display, it makes the Sport collection watches up to 30 percent lighter than our stainless steel models. It’s also exceptionally pure, with a beautifully consistent appearance that’s difficult to achieve with traditional aluminum alloys.”

Speaking of Apple Watch, Apple will also introduce new Sport bands with new colors on the 9th.

9to5Mac has said that The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will retain the design of the current models, but will include several new features, according to sources. The new smartphones will include Force Touch-based displays for shortcutting popular iOS features, 12 megapixel rear cameras that can record 4K videoupgraded front cameras, faster A9 processors, 2GB of RAM, animated wallpapers, and a new Rose Gold color option. The new iPhones are expected to go on sale in retail stores on September 18th.”
